Last week the temperatures here in Vancouver soared above 20°C for the first time this year. A perfect reminder that there’s no longer any excuse to leave the house without sunscreen and that it’s time to streamline my morning makeup routine for the hotter months.
All products are (in my experience) safe for my 38-year-old, dry, acne-prone skin.
For me, this time of year is a collage of frenetic work days and peaceful evenings and weekends. Summer holidays are approaching along with graduation season and summer school. My beauty products are doing the most while I cheer my students on at rugby games, enjoy cocktails on patios, and chat about books and true crime podcasts with my best friend turned neighbour in her sunny backyard.
The products* carrying me through this fun-filled sun-filled season, in the particular order I use them:
It Cosmetics Hello Sunshine Invisible Sunscreen
First I do skincare, which varies depending on the day. Then, this sunscreen which doubles as a primer is the first priority for my skin. It leaves no cast and has a finish I’d describe as being between dewy and satiny (ie. not greasy or shiny, not drying).
SAIE Glowy Super Gel - Sunglow
The L’Oreal Lumi Glotion does the same job as these glow drops, tbh, but I love the gel formula of the Saie. I rub this first on my cheekbones and then spread around the rest of my face for a pre-foundation glowy base.
Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop Stick Blur + Smooth Tint Stick Foundation
Finally a foundation stick that doesn’t look cakey! I am using light-medium cool shade 6. I rub it on and blend with a brush for perfect coverage.
MAC Fix+ Stay Over Setting Spray
My ride or die setting spray. I spritz this on right after foundation and then again at the end of my make up routine.
KOSAS Air Brow Clean + Clear Lifting Eyebrow Gel
While the setting spray does her work, I do brows and lashes. I got this as a birthday gift back in February and splurged on the full size when it ran out. I use it to lift and comb my brows for an effortless but tamed look.
I’m not trying to be dramatic when I say that tubing mascara changed my life. But really, not having to worry about oil-based skincare rubbing on my lids and giving me raccoon eyes has been a big deal. I’m working my way through the various options available, and right now I’m using and enjoying the Milani. (I previously used the L’Oreal and it was good but felt like it didn’t last long.) Will report back when I’ve tried the Essence and Merit options.
I’ve tried so many new bronzers lately, so it made me lol when I realized the OG Laguna 02 (the original, which I used religiously from probably 2005 to the dawn of TikTok beauty reviews) ticks all the boxes. Not too warm, not too cool, perfect amount of pigment, no sparkle. Check!
Milk Makeup Cooling Water Jelly Tint + Lip Cheek Blush Stain
This product is brand new to me and I’m in love. I’ve got the shade Burst. It dries quickly so you have to work quickly on the cheeks. It adds a cute popsicle pout to the lips as well.
Finally, for a dab of gloss I will reach for one of the Mac glowy lip balms. I have multiple shades, but I’ve been reaching for the sheer violet Grapely Awakening since reading that berry lips are hot for summer here.
Have you tried any of these? Have a favourite recommendation that I might love? Let me know!
As always, thanks for reading!

Playlist: Spring ➰
This week it felt like the weather finally caught up with the season! For end-of-year teacher exhaustion reasons, though, my energy is more cat stretched out in a ray of sunshine than the bright bursts of floral vivaciousness I see outside. I’ll be having a chill weekend with plans to thrift, go for coffee, and get a f…
I enjoyed this post. I’m always curious what other people are doing for makeup. Can you explain what tubing mascara is? Second time this week I’ve heard that term.
